1. Having played here for so many seasons, what do you think are the differences now from say 3 years ago?
How has the club evolved?
There's a bit more structure in the club, with the youngsters knocking on the door. Kampong is a club with the usual expats coming and going after a few years, that makes it difficult to build a core.
Average age has dropped dramatically, I think people enjoy it more and the intensity is good. Drafting the youth into 1st team is a slow process that will pay its dividents the next few years. Also, its good to see a few real Kampongers coming back on the scene! I love to see a sunday evening with all teams and supporters sitting together.
2. How do you maintain such high intensity levels?
I get a lot of energy just being on the field. The adrenaline keeps me going like a Duracell bunny.
3. Where would you like the club to be 5 years from now? What vision do you have for the club?
In 5 years, the talented youngsters will rule the 1st team. I hope they will make it together, with a bit of determination they could go for the Topklasse!
Wouter's son plays in the youth and outplays daddy. Eelko's youngest son runs out fellow kids at the non-strikers end.
We have an internationally renowed practice center and attract several young talents with the academy.
Zami is crowded with the non-talented bunch and guys like Jonno C, Eelko, Q, Wouter, Trauty, etc.
We finally have a scorebord!!!!
4. What has been that one standout moment for you at Kampong,on or off the field?
There's actually a few. We became champions with the 2nd team and the captain (guess who) was thrown into the creek. We had a few tight games with me and Ashwani (the best Nr 11 you can wish for) on the pitch winning in the last over.
Two years ago, relegation for the first team was almost inevitable when we needed to chase down 225 against Quick Haag. I was drafted into the 1st team and went in at nr 6 with the score 130 for 4 with PC in the middle. No one gave a penny for Kampong, understandable with the tail starting at nr 6 :-), but PC and I managed to chase the total on the 2nd last ball, 95 partnership and 10/over needed!
Finally, last year we won against Hercules, for the first time in my career. We got 234 with suprise basher Abhi hitting monstrous sixes and Krieky punching Adrian on the head between overs to keep him awake while batting. I got two tight stumpings on Camille's bowling to pull Hercules back and the crowd was unusually silent. The beers really tasted better after that game.
5. Retirement plans?
You need to carry me off the field, or hit me on the knee!
Otherwise, I'll see myself playing for a few years. If I loose my mojo, and we get a talented keeper around the corner, I might fancy a return to Zami 1.
